A family's journey from a Jordanian farm to authentic Middle Eastern food in San Bruno & Redwood City.
Mazra didn't start as a restaurant. It started in our family's neighborhood grocery store in 2005, where our parents sold the ingredients they grew up with and cooked the food they missed from home. Long before we ever served a customer, we learned that good food begins with good ingredients.
Our father grew up in the village of Balila, Jordan, where he spent much of his childhood working on his family's mazra'a—their farm. Every summer, my siblings and I were back in Jordan learning the same lessons he grew up with: great food doesn't need to be complicated. Buy the best ingredients you can find, treat them with respect, and let them speak for themselves.
"The best compliment isn't that the food is good, it's when someone says it tastes like home."
That idea has shaped everything we've built.
Today, my brother and I still cook with those same principles. Every skewer is grilled over real mesquite charcoal because that's the flavor we grew up with. Every mezza is made from scratch because that's how it was made in our home. We never stop refining our recipes, not because we're chasing perfection, but because ingredients change, seasons change, and good recipes should evolve with them. Standing still means falling behind.
We've never been interested in reinventing Middle Eastern food or following trends. Our goal has always been much simpler: cook the food we grew up eating and serve it the way we believe it deserves to be served.
If you've spent time in the Middle Eastern or Eastern Mediterranean, we hope something on your table feels familiar. If this is your first experience with our food, we hope it's the beginning of many more.
From our family's grocery store to our restaurants today, thank you for being part of the journey.
